April & May 1945
Marion has been sick since April 4th
26 very sick in Toronto General Hospital. She’s been sick since the 4th of April but they didn’t tell us. Washed this morning and Mr & Mrs Coffin took us to Town to see Pauline. Got another air-mail letter from Nan saying Marion is a little better. Both of us wrecks.
27 Not feeling very good and Ernest taking a cold.
28 Dad in bed this morning but he got up around 4 PM. Made pies but not doing more than I can help. Pouring rain all day and bitter cold to-night. A rumor started that Germany had quit fighting but there is no truth in it, not yet.
29 Sunday. A miserable day all day, blowing and cold.
30 Fine. Mr Smith and Grant here to dinner. Busy. Heber & PJ & WT Ralph Stewart and Marie[?] out looking over a sight for Tea Room. Rather a strenuous day.
May 1st House cleaning for next three days. Washed
4 curtains, got them ironed and up. Marion still in Gen Hospital Toronto but is improving. Fighting
5 has practically ceased in Western Germany. Hitler reported to have died on May 2nd but no one is sure of that. Ced Simpson here to-night for 8th Victory Loan. Dad drove Mr Coffins mare from Cyril Toronto. Town on the 3rd.
6 S. Fog all day. Mr Coffin in bed, think they had Dr Stevenson this afternoon. Jones & Stewart out for the afternoon.
7 Word came through to-day that the war in Germany
May 1945
Baby girl, Meta[?] Karolyn, arrived at Stirling Stewart.
7 is over. It is not official but it has been announced that Victory will be celebrated to-morrow.
8 The war in Germany is over and has been celebrated all across Canada. Halifax had a real riot and millions of dollars worth of damage done in the city by a drunken mob of hysterical people. Mr & Mrs Ben Woolner here in the afternoon. I put out a wash in the morning, and Howard Hurst arrived around 5:15 PM. Pretty near all in to-night. My feet terribly sore.
9 A lovely day after a shower of rain. Just busy all day and terribly crippled. Russia celebrating her Victory and end of war to-day. For Britain and Canada there is still the war in the Pacific to finish with the Americans.
10 A nice day. Had four extra men to dinner and went to Town with Eric and Marion. Una went along too.
11 Finished my ironing. Miserable day.
12 Grant here to-day. No news. Couldn’t cut grass, ground too wet.
13 Thanksgiving Services in all the churches across Canada. Jack took us to Rustico to church in morning. Heber, Pauline & Terry out, Annie & Alfred up in afternoon and David and Lillian Johnston here in evening.
14 A miserable day all day. Cold and wet. Letters from Waine and Marion. George & Sadie here in evening.
