5  back porch floor. Froze hard all day

6  Still cold. Cleared some stuff out of attic and burned.

 

7  Not feeling very spry. Letters from three girls.

 

8  Mr Coffin had another funeral and his two church services. Dad went to Church in AM. Una up in afternoon. Thawing.

 

9  Lovely morning but fog came in from East around 4 o’clock and turned colder.

 

10  44 this morning and over 60 this afternoon. We cleaned the dining room. Letter from Elaine.

 

11  A lovely day. Very warm up to 70 around noon. Dad cleaned his room. I didn’t do much.

 

12  Another fine day. President Franklin D. Roosevelt died this afternoon at Warm Springs, Georgia of cerebral hemorrhage. A shock to the States and the Allied World. Vice Pres Truman sworn in as President at 7:09 EWT. He gave his life for his country and his friends.

 

13  Very warm and fine. Temp up to 70 above. All programs cancelled on radio and soft music played all day and on Saturday the 14th too. The funeral

 

14  service was in the East room of the White House. A simple beautiful service that was not broadcast but a couple of radio reporters gave a very vivid word picture of proceedings. The burial was at his home by the Hudson in Hyde Park, New York State on Sunday morning.

Russians in Berlin

 

15th  S. Turned colder this evening and froze hard before morning and snowed quite thick in afternoon. The Jones family came out before dinner and left for home around 7 PM. Terry is a darling and has grown so.

 

16  Didn’t do much, sewing some. Got letter from Murray saying Marion has sprained her wrist pretty bad.

 

17  Did a little cleaning up stairs, my bureau drawers. Some burning too. Rained to-day but cold. Sundays snow didn’t last long, twas about all gone last night.

 

18  Warmer to-day. Don’t remember what we were doing.

 

19  Started to clean my room but went to Town with Anna and Reggie. Twas a nice day but wind cold in evening. Had dinner at Paulines and saw Enid for a while.

 

20  Cleaned my room and painted woodwork and

 

21  cleaned Dads room over kitchen. Tired at night.

 

22  S. 36. What a day all day. Raining and snowing and cold. Had hope Pauline etc. would get out to-day but they didn’t. Church to-night. Something has gone wrong with our water system.

 

23  A bad day all day, high wind and cold with snow flurries.

 

24  Same as yesterday only no rain. Can’t do much. General meeting of Cemetery at night. Calmed down.

 

25  Another miserable day with north wind.

 

26  Got airmail from Anita saying that Marion is
