December 1941-January 1942

19  Heber got out from Town and was here to dinner. A lovely mild day. Heber got as far as Charlie McKenzies old place.

20  Dad went to Emerald for Mischief. Keith met him there and exchanged our Christmas gifts. Keith & Anita gave us a lovely lamp. Snowed some all day but got much worse at night and blew a gale.

21  A big snow storm all day and church services in Town are cancelled. A grand day to rest. Mother in bed all day.

29  Just busy last week and both of us very lonely but we wouldn’t admit it. Christmas was a mild rainy day. Mother seemed so weak. We did not decorate. The Christmas cactus was beautiful. Got all my gifts away by the 26th. Ernest went to Town the 24th and Heber didn’t come out. The weather was kept very mild but cloudy all the week. Annie & Alfred Moore and Hester & Fred Clarke were our only visitors. The chick-a-dees are eating out of my hand to-day. Thought Mother would get up but she doesn’t feel able and looks bad.

The fall of Hong Kong and Winston Churchills arrival in the United States have been the big events as well as Germans retreating all along Russian front.

31  Have had wonderful weather for over a week. Winston Churchill arrived in Ottawa on the 30th. Mother keeps about the same. David Johnston Mary and Lorne McNeill and Eric Bell were visitors this week.

1942

Jan 12th  Three air planes crashed, 2 Ansons at Southport seven men killed and one plane near S. Side 1 killed

Jan 1st  A lovely day Eric Bell here this evening. Had a few lovely mild days. Anita & Ernest went to church on the 4th. Mr Tillie just got back from Montreal on the 3rd and evidently hadn’t taken time to prepare a sermon or prayer. It may be remembered for years to come that Mr Tillie forgot to pray at the service. Mary and Will Graham and Sarah, Marjorie Ced and Annie Earl were visitors on the 5th & 6th.

7  Pretty cold but Ernest got Annie Earl to come and stay with me and he went to Summerside in afternoon. Temp dropped to 10 below and 12B.

8  Got up early and got three fires on and kept busy feeding them all day. ‘Twas 22B in S. Side. Ernest got home at 6:45 PM. Dr Claude found him much better.

9  Fine and moderated considerable. Mother not too good these days. Started to snow at night and

10  snowed all day. Temp about 30A but turned colder and blowing at night. 5 or 6 inches of snow fell just like down. Cecil & Leona came to see Mother.

11  8B. And blowing but sunny. Imagine the roads are bad. Annie, Ethel & Jennie Moore and Mr Shaw called this afternoon. Mother has been a little better to-day.

12  Fine to-day. Washed. May Green & Dora McCoubrey called this afternoon to see Mother. Mother has been brighter to-day.

13  Fine in morning but kept getting colder all day. Mother
