March 1949
S. Thawed all day and roads got very bad. Rested. We didn’t have anyone in to-day and both rested.
Baked bread, snowed to-night. Not doing much extra.
Silver thaw and terribly icy. Not safe for Dad to go out. Fred brought us a nice piece of pork yesterday so we are alright for meat for a while.
Milder to-day but freezing again. Still a slippery crust on the snow. Grant McLeod and several others got the shore road opened to Rustico and he hauled potatoes to Hunter River to-day and yesterday. Mike Doyle very sick, cancer. They have a nurse.
Raining and freezing in the morning, no power or telephone and a terrible coat of ice on wires and trees. Softened some by afternoon.
Power came on around 7 PM. Blowing a gale and snowing this afternoon but not very cold. Telephone men working too. 78 new telephone poles down between Winsloe and Fredricton. Allen McCoubrey quite sick.
Fine. Felt very tired all day. Baptist Church in afternoon. Radio only fair to-day.
Pauline 29 to-day. Got a letter from her. Not feeling very spry, day fine, not cold.
A nice day and I put out a pretty big washing. Went over to Unas for eggs in afternoon. Got thread from Nan for Paulines placemats.
March 1949
One howling blizzard in the morning, eased up a little by noon and calmed down by night. Charlottetown plugged solid and no mail anywhere and stores closed. Dad not very well after supper, his hand, left, and left foot went bad. Fred came over for a while and he slept fairly good after he got to sleep.
Fine but was a snow at night and roads very bad. Mike Doyle very sick, in fact very low.
Dad staying in bed, his hand and foot still bad.
Busy but don’t seem to do much. Did a little baking and sweeping up the house. Tired at night.
Mike Doyle died
Dads hand is some better and the foot no worse. Annie & Alfred Moore here in afternoon. I phoned to Pauline in afternoon. They were badly snowed in.
Lovely morning but very cold, the coldest this month. Soon clouded over and wind SE and snowing this evening. Been one hectic day with company popping in every now and then. Fred, Ernest Clark, Stirling, Fred again and Stirling Campbell collecting for Red Cross. Ernest better to-day than he has been.
Snow plough went through and theres mountains of snow on both sides of road and trucks are moving potatoes to Town in Hunter River.
Jean Clark Bulman has a baby girl in PEI Hospital. Eric Bell came to see us. Dad still in bed.
