Jan 1948

 

Jan 1  A cloudy day and chill. Bad storms in Manitoba and Middle States. We had dinner at Freds.

 

2  Friday. A lovely day like March. I washed a few things in the forenoon. Bobby came with mail. The second we have had this week. Roads better to-day and men went to New Glasgow with their cream. Letters from Nan, Waine, & Pauline.

 

9  We have had wonderful weather for the last week. Very calm and grey overhead but no more snow and temperature from 22 to 32 above. It’s snowing to-night and a storm is coming. Ernest was helping Jack Stewart for a couple of days. Elmer Clark is home for a two week holiday.

 

10  Fine but a chill wind. Snowing at night. Colder. No mail.

 

11  S. 10. Snowing and blowing all day and quite cold.

 

12  3 above and clear skies this morning. The house very comfortable last night. Quiet day. A mixture of weather this week, snow, mild, and in Nova Scotia 36 hours of rain around

 

13 & 14  A critical water shortage in both NB and Nova Scotia. Very dense fog here on the 14th and snowed at night. Busy knitting, not much else to do.

 

15  Decidedly colder and went to 3B at night, not

Jan 1948 & Feb

 

16  wind and we are quite comfortable. A lot of snow on the level now and more coming. Letter from Marion to-day. I was out on the snowshoes this afternoon. Temp 18 above to-night.

 

17  34 above and dead calm. Fog very thick most of day. Finished a pair of gloves for Stirling

 

18  S. Still mild but ice and mist and turned cold at night. A very bad storm in parts of NB and quite a bad storm here. Annie & Alfred here to supper.

 

19 2A. Blowing a gale and drifting. All roads more or less blocked on the Island. No mail. Cleared off around noon and bright sunshine in afternoon. We have had very cold weather the last two weeks of January and some days quite stormy. Several times 8B and 5B. Not too much sunshine. 24 inches of ice on pond.

Jan 30  Mahatama Gandhi was assassinated to-day. Little Paul Jones weighed 10lbs at 6 weeks old.

 

Feb 1st  A nice day and not so cold. Hester, George & Winnielea here this forenoon and Stirling until 10:40 to-night. Working on a jig-saw puzzle that Pauline sent out. Jennie & Clarkes engagement announced in the Guardian last week.
