1948
March 1st Not very lamb like but sunny and blowing and very cold. Took a nasty twist in my side and not feeling very good by night. Ernest hasn’t been too well lately either.
2 A nice day but still zero weather every night. A lot of snow in the woods and not easy for farmers to get their wood out. Hester over for a while this afternoon. Feeling better than yesterday.
3 We were supposed to have a storm but nothing serious happened, only the wind was east or N. east and very chill. 12 inches of snow fell in some parts of Nova Scotia.
4 A nice day but zero at night. Got drum of oil from New Glasgow. Every evening cold.
5 A bitter cold day, the coldest of the winter in Ch. Town. Just tried to keep warm and did. Blowing hard all day.
6 Not a bad day after it moderated. Got a letter from Pauline and parcel with jig-saw puzzle and pound of bacon and is that bacon good. Eric & Una took me with them to see Anna. Shes improving but nerves in bad shape. Had a nice evening.
7 S. A nice day and not so cold. Stirling all over in the forenoon and Hester run in for a while in afternoon. Pretty quiet day.
March 1948
8 A snow storm and very cold and more snow promised for to-morrow. Halifax has had 102 inches of snow this winter, a 45 yr record.
9 Very cold all this week until the 13th. The 12th and 13th the coldest March day on record and temp was 17B on the morning of 13th. Got my washing done on Wed. Nothing special happening and the World in general in an uproar. Russia has turned Checoslvacia into a Communist State and the situation is very serious.
14th Was a nice day and not so cold. Pauline 28 to-day. Very quiet day at home while our neighbours went visiting. Ernest not feeling very well some days.
15 Hazy[?] and blowing a gale, not so cold. Fred & Ernest went to French River about windows and a door for the porch. Everything very white.
16 The first spring like day this year. Temp around 40 above and thawed a lot and the fields showing bare. Blew hard at night and didn’t freeze.
17 Cloudy this forenoon but cleared off in afternoon. Ernest took some books down to Anna to read. Turning much colder tonight but calm and a perfect sunset and evening.
The rest of March was cold right to the end. A very white winter until April. Easter was on March 26th. I got down to the church with Stirlings. The WMS put on an Easter Pageant.
