Oct 1939

 

a lot of pictures of the place and loves every bit of It. She is feeling much better since she came. Marion is to see Mrs Johnston and Maud to see Amanda for the afternoon.

 

14  We had a grand stroll back through the trails, a perfect day. Weather has been grand all the week. Maud & I invited to Ern McNeill for supper and we had a very nice time. Ern brought us home. Premier Campbell & Mrs Campbell were here for a while in evening.

 

15  S. Cold windy day. Communion Service in United Church and Lorraine & Pauline joined the church. Mother down for day. House full of company all afternoon. Mr & Mrs Ponroy Murray, Emerson & Hilda, the Murray twins and son, Lorne & Mary and boys, Mr & Mrs Bell and Mrs Simms. Had a chicken dinner but no one very hungry for supper. Charlie in for dinner.

 

16  Got up pretty early and the girls took Maud and Marion and the kiddies to the boat. House very quiet and lonely to-day. Had a long letter from Aunt Jen. Went to bed with a sore back. Hurt it pushing the car this AM.

 

17  Cloudy and blowing hard and bitter cold. Girls had a huge washing and I couldn’t help them. CGIT at Manse. A real storm at night and hail and snow.

 

18  30A. The ground white and snow and hail squalls all day.

Oct & Nov 1939

 

Alvin & Jean Manderson married on the 20th

 

18  The dahlias blooming away quite cheerfully but tonight will fix them. A bad storm on Atlantic between Newfoundland & Cape Breton. Freezing to-night. A few people have not finished digging potatoes.

 

19  28A. Still cold and ground froze. Mr Smith here to dinner. Weather better. Not much doing. Car idle for days. Alvin Webb & Jean Manderson to be married in Sussex.

Capt Joe Boute died

 

21  Nice day. We went to town in evening and I got me a nice new blanket. Not much news.

 

22  S. Girls went to Sunday school and B. Church in afternoon. Poured rain all afternoon and night.

 

23  Girls washed in AM. Started to rain and wind came round north and cold and blowing hard.

 

24  Mr. Henderson left this morning for Toronto. Cold morning but not raining. Went down to Keith’s in afternoon. Very cold night. Stayed down until Nov. 1st. Mr Woods took his family back to Toronto on the 1st. Mr Smith sent out a new Victory Range on Oct 28th and plumbers here two days. A lot of rainy days and wind. Keith and Margaret working at turnips. Spent one afternoon the 30th at Mrs Fred McQuarries. Pauline, Mrs Lowther and Dad came down for me. Feeling rather rotten.

 

Nov 2   Not feeling very spry. The granary has been moved to the old orchard. Have been doing quite
