March 1940

March 1940

9  Snowed very thick and turned to rain at noon and just poured all the afternoon. Almost finished my quilt. Edward over in evening.

10  S.  Still cloudy and mild and plenty of water in cellar. Girls went to B. church with David.

11  Washed but a cloudy day. Dad & I went to Rustico in afternoon and had tea at Alec’s. Letters from the girls and CGIT at night.

12  In bed almost all day with a bad head. Finland about giving up the fight and giving way to Russia.

13  Another grey day. Have hardly seen the sun since the 3rd of March. Pauline & Waine finished their 2nd mat. Ernest & Winnie and John here this evening.

14  Fine. Ernest took Lorraine to Hunter River and brought home a load of coal. Waine went to Carleton. Finished piecing my quilt and put it together. Mrs Honeywell Bulman died at Hunter River. Has been sick for a quite a time.

Ethel Wedlock Bulman

15  Fine and wind south east and blowing a gale at night. Ernest got a load of wood home. Nothing doing special.

16  Raining this morning. Ernest had planned to drive to Carleton but didn’t. Quite mild but freezing again to night.

17  Dad went to Carleton this morning and Pauline went to Church and to sing-song at Lewis Toombs to-night.

18  Fine. Washed and ironed and knit. Messers Branders & Coles came to dig dry well for club house. Institute at Mrs Wyands.

March 26. Federal election. King Gov. returned with the largest majority ever.

19  18A and a lovely day. Ernest & Lorraine got home from Carleton at 1.15 PM. CGIT at Alfred Moores. Lorraine walked. Light snow at night.

20  Cloudy early but cleared up. Sadie & Winnielea in for a little while.

21  Very dirty, Ernest went to Cyriac for groceries. Dirty all day.

22  Fine cold in morning but went up to 36 in day. Dad and I went to Mayfield. I stayed at Charlie Wyands and Ernest went on to Allen Moffats. Mr Wyand in bad shape and so is Everett Laird.

Good Friday

23  A big snow storm and the men couldn’t work. In bed all day. Blowing a gale to-night and the roads will be bad.

24  The snow piled up in banks and still drifting. Not feeling very spry. No church, no news.

Easter

25  Still drifting some but fine. Roads not so bad as expected. CGIT here to-night. Long letter from Nan. Storm all across Canada and owing to spots on sun cable and telegraphic communication between Europe and America cut off.

26  Still blowing and drifting but Canada gave McKenzie King the largest support that any Canadian leader has ever had and Dr. Manion has been defeated. McKenzie King gave six days to the campaign and Manion six weeks of abuse and he got just what he deserved. Rather an exciting day for the Webb family. Marion Tennis Gallant has a baby boy, sixth child.

27  The day after and Dad & I celebrated by taking May with us to Bernards. Mrs Bernard has been very well this winter. the roads grand but a tremendous lot of snow in places and no bare ground showing up yet, even long the shore.
