March 1940
28 A lovely day. Ernest went to Hunter River for coal, got home around 3.30. Knitting most of day. Lorraine went with Charlie to choir practice at Bobs and Dad and I set up and listened to Foster Hewitt broadcast the hockey game from Detroit between Red Wings & Maple Leafs. Leafs won 3-1. Free for all 12 man fight.
29 A lovely day. Charlie had Gypsy in forenoon and brought Mother down for the day. Alf Simpson arrived about 9.30 AM. Ernest cut up a quarter of meat for canning. Lorraine at Austins all day helping Mrs Lowther. Thawing in afternoon. Bible Class at Manse.
30 Still thawing and the snow settling very fast. Busy with Saturdays work and Dad and I went down to see Bob and Jennie in evening. Eric Bell down. Still thawing and raining.
31 Foggy and thawed a lot. Ernest & girls went to U. church in afternoon. Radio poor owing to sun spots. Edward, Mary & David here in evening. Thunder & Lightening at night and turned colder.
April 1 Dad took Mother home. Road not too good. Wind cold. Girls washed Stirling & Mabel and Mr & Mrs Woolner here for evening. CGIT here.
2 Fine day. Ernest went to Hunter River for Heber and I went over with Ellice. Road getting pretty soft by evening.
3 Mr Paynter here for dinner and Charles. Dad & I went up to Fenners in evening and got home at 1:20. The word came through of Mrs Albert Simpsons death at Darnley. She was known as Aunt Maggie Albert and was 89. She died at her daughter Ethels’.

4 Lorraine taking a cold. Cold wind and the ice drifting in again.
April 1940
5 A miserable day all day. South east wind rain and snow. The funeral from Geddie Memorial Church and burial in Cavendish Cemetery. Not many came down and we didn’t get over.
6 Cold and blowing hard all day. Never got warm all day until night. Ernest and Lorraine went to Lewis Toombs for evening Pauline & Heber went over to Ern McNeills for evening. Pauline has finished Winnies sweater.
7 Still cold and blowing. Lorraine went to Church. Sing-song at Wyands.
8 A perfect day. Girls washed, Dad went to Rustico and I walked over to Ern McNeills. Mr Paynter & Campbell arrived before dinner and work started again.
9 Cloudy and rained quite a bit to-day. Hitler moving troops to Norway. Put a quilt in frames this morning.
10 Quilted all day. Lorraine went to Missionary Meeting at Ern McNeills. Ruby and Allison Profitt have twin boys. Fine day and part of frame of club house went up. Thawing every day but still freezing at night. Letter from girls.

12 Fine all day and temp went up to 48. Lorraine went to Bible Class at Manse and Dad went to Rustico this morning.
Plenty of robins
13 Cloudy and blowing a gale. Rained hard at night. New York Rangers got the Stanley Cup in the final play off with Maple Leafs. Our radio went out. Lorraine got a phone call from Dorothy Toombs and is taking West Royalty School. Finished quilting the fan quilt. All in at night.
