March & April 1939

 

30  down to Keiths. I walked down for mail. Letters from Vern & Margaret. Cecil sick with flu.

 

31  Thawing to-day but colder this evening. Dad over to Hams this afternoon. Lewis is taking down the (Ham’s) barn. Ernest bought a table from him and he came here for his supper. Put a border on one of my quilts baked bread etc. Letter & snaps from Marion.

 

April 1  Fine day but rather chill wind and cold at night. Charlie took Gypsy again today with a load of potatoes for Fred to Margate. Lorraine and I gave the house a once over. Lorne and Mary were up this evening. Mother sick and three of the children. Good roads, plenty of snow.

 

2  S. A foggy morning and chill N East wind. Lorraine and Ernest went to Church. Lorraine stayed at George McCoubreys for dinner. Had a nice quiet day.

3  Not a nice morning so didn’t wash. At night got a phone call from Ch. Town from Everett Shiles[?] on his way home from London Eng and Spain. Some excited. Charlie here all night.

 

4  Ernest took Lorraine and Charlie to Hunter River and brought Everett home. How grand to see him, the first of our British Columbia cousins to visit PEI. If only Perley had lived to see him.

Mrs Alfred Fyfe died

 

5  Not a very nice day. Cold wind. Everett and I went to Bay View to see Mother. She is quite sick but a little better than she was. Wrote to Elaine to-night.

April 1939

 

Situation in Europe very critical just now

 

6  Not a bad day. Froze in morning, foggy but cleared up in afternoon. Dad and I washed. Everett had a long walk in afternoon and had pancakes for supper. Fred Clarke down this evening. Talked a lot and tired to-night.

 

7  Got up at 4:45 and Ernest took Everett to Station and brought the girls and Charlie home. Poured rain all the forenoon and blowing a gale. Everyone tired to-night.

 

8  Cold west wind this morning. Both girls on the job to-day. Knitting. Ernest tramped up to Earls etc. and in to Tennis’s in afternoon. The two Edgars drove over the Golf Course, both drunk but knew better. Tennis is hauling Hams barn. Ham in Kensington. The inauguration program of the new CBA Broadcasting station for the Maritimes on the radio to-night.

 

9  S.  Easter Sunday and a snow storm all day. Stayed in bed until noon. Wrote letters. Rather a dreary day.

10  A nice sunny day and the snow disappeared in sunny places. Put a quilt in frames to-day. Lorraine went to Jerrys to see about program for concert. Letter from Aunt Maud wanting Anita for a year. Letter from Aunt Jen too.

 

11  Just one miserable day all day. Pauline & I quilting. Snowing and raining in afternoon. CGIT here to-night.
