Sept 1940

 

Air raids pretty bad over London.

 

8  Blowing a gale and raining nearly all day. Mr & Mrs Clarence McLean arrived before dinner. Nee Margaret Dennis. Very nice looking couple. Heavy sea storm. Car from Sydney in. No church.

 

9  Went with Charlie to Hunter River with Mr & Mrs Gillings and in the afternoon Pauline & I took Alec & May to Carleton and Summerside & back to Carleton for lunch. Quite a crowd here all the afternoon.

 

10  Lovely morning. Girls washed and had 4 for lunch. Mr & Mrs Card of Dorchester & Dr & Mrs Doull of Halifax. Rained little at night. Mary McLeans baby, stillborn.

11  We are invited to dinner at the Highlands at Georgetown by the Bonnells. Mr & Mrs Stirling & Doris were there too so we had a very pleasant day. A tragedy at Montague school grounds where little Margaret Duncan was killed by a trench mortar falling on her head. Institute here at night. Mrs Wyand & Mrs Jerry not here.

12  Dark damp day and raining hard to-night. Busy making sarsarparella wine, jelly, plum jam & peach jam. Ina & Louise here so plenty doing.

 

13  Rained most of day. Stayed in bed until 3 PM. Cleared up to-night. No news.

 

14  A perfect summer day. Got up before dinner and stayed out doors. A letter from Mrs Carse telling of Mr Carses’ death on Sept 3rd. Quite a number around in afternoon. Girls went to town with Heber.

15  S. A lovely day but wind east and cool. A lot of people around this afternoon and 32 played Golf to-day. Enid and Reuel out. Rally Service at Church to-night. Mother down for the day. Doris went home last night.

 

16  Washed and it rained. Got stuff ready for pickles and India relish. Terrific storm to-night and roof blew

 

17  off of Ira McCoubrey’s barn and likely a good many others. Terribly loss of shipping etc all along Atlantic cost and its still raining and blowing. Dad & Heber getting water samples of the ponds and Heber took the girls and Mary & Winnifred Haslem to S. Side to a show at night. Wash out on line. Wind shifted to

 

18  west and its still raining. Been wet in Ontario too. Didn’t rain much this morning and we got the clothes dry and ironed. Feeling better. Made mustard pickles and cut up stuff for chow. Terrible air raids over London all night and day.

 

19  A lovely day. Dad & I went up to Head of Bay. He had to put up signs re shooting and I took my knitting. Mrs Albert up this afternoon. Art Simpson brought word that Aunt Sadie was dying so we went to O’Leary that night and so that’s the way we spent our 35th wedding anniversary and now its Oct 10th and I’ve been on my back for three days and poor Aunt Sadie is still living.
