January 1939
9 Snowed a little in morning but didn’t amount to much. Dad and Anita went to Johnstons for hair cuts. PJ went to Stanley Rink with Austin Graham and George and Sadie Clarke spent the evening here.
10 Girls washed and it rained and froze so the clothes were dried up stairs. Very icy at night. CGIT here.
11 A nice day turned colder again and blowing a gale at night. The roads very bare of snow. Ernest and I went down to Alec’s at night for a bag of potatoes etc. Robert Zeb tearing down the barn and have over half of the roof down.
12 16A. Fine frosty morning, clear but cold enough. The men worked at barn and have it over half down. Charlie Mckenzie at home after over three weeks visiting. Very cold night, 14A and such a gale.
13 Bitter cold and blowing hard all day long. Snow fell through middle States and Ontario. Men didn’t work on barn to-day. Charlie here for supper and evening. Dad took Arthur to New Glasgow and he was going to walk the rest of way to Hunter River.
14 14A. Not blowing so hard. Quite a number of teams helping Robert haul the barn. Not doing much in house. Note from Marion.
15 A nice day. Quiet. Mr Tillie preached in the Baptist Church to-night.
January 1939
16 A perfect morning, 14 above and a grand day. The men working at the barn and have the roof nearly all off. Charlie came down for supper. Dad & Lorraine each got a cheque from Dr. Bonnell.
17 A nice day. Heavy white frost this morning. Seven men here for dinner. Bevins men brought out sceptic tanks and tile in Jenkins Transfer truck. Travelling through fields from Lorne Houstons to Mayfield road.
The last pieces of old barn came down
18 Mr Smith and Jim Coles up to-day. Finished piecing no. 1 pin wheel quilt. Amos took Gypsy to Creek and she got badly crippled on him and is in at David Johnstons.
19 Rather nice day not very cold. Dad into Johnstons a couple of times. Gypsy not suffering so much today. Sewed up two quilts. Girls went to Ern McNeills to-night.
20 Snowing a little until afternoon. Arthur and John Myers walked from Hunter River. Ernest & Amos working at ice. Frosty at night but calm.
21 Arthur got telegram with work in sight so started home right away and John & Lorraine went with him. Would have a long wait in Hunter River. Dad borrowed a horse from Milton. Got word of Mrs Toombs death. Louis went to Halifax yesterday. Gypsy getting better. Started knitting my suit and Anita started her coat. Has been a perfect winter day.
